Historical
Our historic water stilt is already about 1000 years old and was the origin of the castles Rot-, Schwarz- and Weißwasserstelz.
The house – formerly a tithe barn – belonged to Weißwasserstelz Castle , near which the castles of Schwarz- and Rotwasserstelz were also located. Its connection to the castle was confirmed by the discovery of birthstones and grave markers and the description of the escape routes and defensive passages.
Oxen could be roasted in the castle kitchen of Weißwasserstelz . It was a comfortable knight's residence, which was destroyed down to ruins during the Thirty Years' War.
Rotwasserstelz Castle at the Kaiserstuhl border crossing is still preserved and is known today as Rötteln Castle.
Schwarzwasserstelz Castle was preserved until 1875 and was then sold to the SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) for demolition (incomprehensible to posterity!).
Wasserstelz was opened as a guesthouse and restaurant in August 1997 after the renovation and restoration work.
Additionally, Wasserstelz is mentioned in the book "Hadlaub" by the Swiss poet Gottfried Keller .
Poem by Gottfried Keller:
(* July 19, 1819 in Zurich; † July 15, 1890 in Zurich)
"There, the green ribbon of waves rushes by."
along the Rhine, through the forest and floodplain.
Beyond, my dear Baden and
Here we already have a Swiss rocky slope.
I'm so glad I finally found you.
You quiet place on the old Rhine
where undisturbed and unknown
"I am allowed to be Swiss and German."
